The PS5 and Xbox Series X/S are powerful machines—this is not news. One such example of this power is The matrix awakenscurrently available on both systems, which offers a free preview of the future of Unreal Engine in-game. This unique experience, however, is going away for goodunless you download it now.
The matrix awakens is not so much a game as an interactive technology demo for Unreal Engine 5. Epic Games was keen to show off the next general of Unreal Engine and what it can add to the game in the future, using examples designed to impress and spark the imagination of gamers and made-to-watch friends.
You can see it in Lorenzo Drago’s demo of Etchū-Daimon Station in Japan. While the experience isn’t yet replicable in a full-scale game, it’s built using Unreal Engine 5, and it’s undoubtedly impressive.
Compared to Drago’s demo, however, The matrix awakens is Grand Theft Auto: The first 10 minutes feature a photorealistic, interactive cutscene featuring Keanu Reaves and Carrie-Anne Moss, before dropping you in the middle of The Matrix, which in this case is a large, active, beautifully rendered town. You can walk, fly or drive through the cityscape to admire everything Unreal has put together – if you prefer a god –mode-like experience, you can use the drone to quickly zoom in on the map.
Contrary to GTAhowever, there is not much to do: Since this is really a tech demo, the main idea is to see how visually impressive Unreal Engine 5 can be on modern hardware. Other than a short gunfight during the initial cutscene, you don’t have any tasks here. Instead, your main goal is to explore the world. Still, it’s a fun experience, especially considering the size of the map for a demo: if you’re the type of person who likes to travel around video game cards exploring aimlessly, you’ll probably enjoy doing it in The matrix awakens.
Unfortunately, the title is set to drop from PlayStation and Xbox stores on Saturday, July 9, three days after this article. After this point, The matrix awakens will no longer be available to new players wishing to try Unreal Engine 5’s version of The Matrix. However, if you downloaded it before July 9, it will remain available as a downloadable option now and in the future.
Even if you’re not very interested in the demo, consider downloading it today, even if you delete it right away. Simply choose to download The matrix awakens for free will ensure that it’s permanently tied to your PlayStation or Xbox, so you’ll always be able to play it in the future if you wish.
