Yahya Abdul-Mateen explains why he plays Morpheus in ‘Matrix 4’ after Laurence Fishburne played iconic role in 3 films

  • Abdul-Mateen first spoke about his role as Morpheus in the upcoming “Matrix 4”.
  • In the last three “Matrix” films, Laurence Fishburne played the leader.

Fans of “The Matrix” are still trying to get over the fact that they won’t see Laurence Fishburne playing Morpheus in the next “Matrix resurrections. “

Yahya Abdul-Mateen II (“Candyman”), however, explained why he was chosen and also hinted at how “The matrix 4 “will integrate this new Morpheus into the scenario.

“It’s definitely a different iteration of the character,” Abdul-Mateen told Entertainment Weekly.

“What viewers will come to understand is that there are many rules of the Matrix,” he continued. “Age, appearance, things that we identify as real can be manipulated in this world. The Matrix is where anything is possible.”

Fishburne played the role of Morpheus in the first three “Matrix” movies and perfectly played the character as Keanu Reeves’ omniscient Neo tour guide as he descends the rabbit hole to become The One.

“I play a character who is definitely aware of the history of The Matrix [and] the story of Morpheus, ”said Abdul-Mateen. “This character is on a journey of self-discovery. There is a lot in our story about growing up, defining your own path. Morpheus is not exempt. ”

While details on “The Matrix Resurrections” have been limited, the film’s first trailer revealed that Abdul-Mateen’s Morpheus has similar callbacks to Fishburne’s Morpheus, including a martial arts duel with Neo.

Fishburne revealed last summer that he will not be returning for the fourth film because he was not asked to return.

“I wasn’t invited,” he told New York Magazine, later telling Collider that “you would have to ask [creator] Lana Wachowski why, because I don’t have an answer to that. “

While there is a different Morpheus, Reeves returns to reprise his role as Neo and will be joined by other stars from the film, including Carrie-Anne Moss and Priyanka Chopra.

“The Matrix Resurrections” hits theaters – and will be available on HBO Max – on December 22.
