Keanu Reeves, Carrie-Anne Moss, Jada Pinkett Smith and… Is that Christina Ricci? How did she end up here?
Christine Ricci, the Emmy Award-winning performer and former teen star known for The Addams Family, Casper and, most recently, Yellowjackets, will appear in the fourth Matrix movie. She plays a minor role – blink and you’ll miss her – and she’ll be one of several dozen new characters introduced to Matrix aficionados.
Nonetheless, seeing the edgy former teen star in this legendary cyberpunk environment is entertaining for ’90s youth – who, after all, is The Matrix’s core demographic.
Here’s a story about the plot of Matrix 4: Neo is back in The Matrix, this time as Thomas Anderson, a world famous video game designer. What has been his most popular game so far? The Matrix Trilogy. After twenty years, Thomas’ supervisor approaches him and asks him to create the fourth installment of the Matrix trilogy. The meta-matrix appears.

In Matrix Resurrections, Christina Ricci plays Who?
Ricci makes a first appearance in the film as Gwyn de Vere. Gwyn is the CEO of the game company where Thomas works. Ironically, Warner Bros. owns this game company. Thomas and his creative team meet Gwyn after learning he must develop Matrix 4 or risk losing his contract.
“Above all, I know I speak for everyone when I say I’m thrilled to be working on a game that’s been so game-changing,” Gwyn told the band. She then hands them a folder that includes a Matrix newsgroup search.
“You’ll discover a breakdown inside, including keyword associations,” she exclaims. “The first two are ‘originality’ and ‘freshness’, which are important to remember when you start working on Matrix 4!” And how many others?
Thomas seemed to be the only one in the room to notice how stupid Gwyn looks when he says it. You don’t have to be a genius to figure out that filmmaker Lana Wachowski, who co-wrote the film with David Mitchell and Aleksandar Hemon, references his own experience when asked to do a fourth Matrix image.
Prior to The Matrix Resurrections, there were rumors in 2017 that Warner Bros. was going to reboot the series without the Wachowski sisters, who had openly said they didn’t want to make another Matrix movie. With that in mind, it’s easy to imagine Ricci’s character as one of many studio executives who pressured the Wachowski sisters to continue a franchise they said was over.

What does the name Gwyn De Vere represent?
From Neo to Morpheus, many names of The matrix franchise have symbolic meanings.
Gwyn de Vere’s name is not mentioned, but it could be a reference to Guinevere, queen and wife of King Arthur; the names sound surprisingly similar, like Morpheus and Orpheus, for example.
If one wants to get into speculation, this possible reference to Guinevere could be Lana’s way of acknowledging her distrust of executives when she was approached to do The Matrix Resurrections and during the sculpting process.
After all, she’s been portrayed as both a villain and a heroine in literature.
This is supported by Lana’s admission in an interview that she “never wanted to do another Matrix movie”. However, after her parents died, she felt it would be beneficial, and she has since said that “creating a story where two individuals came back to life was soothing and consoling”.
So maybe she’s implying by the character’s name that the insistence of Warner Bros. executives. for her to lead another sequel seemed annoying or awful at first, but ended up being a blessing in the end.
The Matrix Resurrections is in theaters now and available on HBO Max.
