After the fourth film, titled The Matrix Resurrections released last December, fans were hoping for another sequel. Fast forward seven months and fans are still unsure if The Matrix 5 could ever materialize.
Despite the buzz surrounding the fifth film, it seems the possibility of The Matrix 5 is almost dead. In fact, before The Matrix Resurrections was announced, it was decided that there would be no more movies for The Matrix franchise.
The Matrix 4 ended with doors left open for the next sequel, so fans thought a fifth movie was definitely on the cards. Even main star Keanu Reeves was ready to return. But producer James McTeigue noted in December that there were no plans for sequels, prequels or a brand new trilogy at this time.
“I think right now it’s just the movie you’ve seen. We don’t have a prequel in mind. We don’t have a sequel in mind. We don’t have another trilogy.” , McTeigue shared with Collider.
In an interview with Fandom, Keanu said he was open to making a fifth movie if Lana was on board. He said, “I mean, if she wanted to do another story and wanted to include me, I’d be honored and grateful. And I’d love to see what happens to Trinity and Neo – and the world.”
Carrie-Anne Moss backs up Keanu, “Totally, of course…that would be amazing.”
He also predicts that Lana Wachowski won’t be moving forward with another movie or The Matrix 5. Speaking to Empire Online, Keanu Reeves said he doesn’t believe there will be another sequel to The Matrix 5. Matrix.
When asked if there was another movie in the works for Keanu Reeves and Carrie-Anne Moss, the handsome actor quipped, “What’s another one? Resurrections Redux .”
“Wachowskian! I don’t think so. If I had to vote – No, not a ballot, a vote. I’d say Lana wouldn’t do another Matrix,” Keanu said.
Why is Matrix 5 less likely to happen in the future?
One of the reasons for this is certainly the poor box office receipts of the fourth season. The first two films, namely The Matrix Reloaded and The Matrix Revolutions, create new records in the box. But the franchise’s dream run began to dip (even slightly) in the third film, and the downturn became even more evident with the fourth film’s box office performance. Many fans weren’t very happy with its storyline, so they might not even regret the cancellation of the fifth movie.
The box office numbers for the fourth film, The Matrix Resurrections, are significantly below expectations. The film was released in both theaters and on HBO streaming services, and it grossed $427 million worldwide, which is less than the original film’s collections. Of course, the creators blame it on the COVID-19 pandemic, but it’s worth noting that the film was released simultaneously in theaters and on HBO MAX streaming services.
Aside from box office performance, star Keanu Reeves and director Lana Wachowski have previously said they currently have no plans for The Matrix 5. Therefore, while Warner Bros. wants to move forward with the fifth film, they must continue without Wachowski. And they’re unlikely to make Matrix movies without Keanu, who probably wouldn’t return without Wachowski. The Matrix 5 therefore seems impossible, at least for the moment.
