The Material Girl herself appeared on Thursday on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon. While Madonna was there to promote her new documentary film, Mrs X, it was a movie she never appeared in that caught everyone’s attention.
Madonna was asked by Fallon about some of the movie roles she would have turned down, like Catwoman in Return of Batman and Nomi Malone in Showgirls. While she agreed with the death Showgirls, she regretted passing on the role of Catwoman, which she called “fierce.”
But Madonna surprised everyone when she revealed, “I also turned down the role in The matrix. Can you believe that? I wanted to kill myself.
She didn’t specify which character, but Trinity was the only female lead. It was eventually played by the masterful Carrie-Anne Moss.
The film spawned a successful trilogy that grossed over $1.6 billion worldwide; a fourth film, The Matrix Resurrections, slated for release in December. This remains one of Madonna’s few regrets.
“It’s like one of the best movies ever made,” Madonna said. “A tiny part of me just regrets this time in my life.”
