October 22, 2021 – A new addition to Zagreb’s culinary scene officially opened last week. Meet Restoran Matrix, a premium addition to the futuristic Matrix Office Park.

Since the first building opened in 2019, I’ve been slightly obsessed with Matrix Office Park, which I used to pass along on my weekly commutes through central Zagreb from Varazdin. In a city that isn’t famous for the finest office building architecture, this place looked more than cool.

And as I was driving over time I saw the Matrix grow, then a second building opened up. But I never seemed to have the time or the reason to check it out in person until last summer when I was invited to attend a CroAI conference. It kind of seemed fitting that such a forward-looking development also had great content for the future.

I was really impressed with the layout and facilities at Matrix, and when I learned a few months ago that a coworking space had opened there, I was tempted to take a look. eye, with one exception.

There was no food at The Matrix. It was essentially an office building that closed after office hours.

Everything has changed recently.

And a rather creative team has come up with a restaurant concept that is perhaps unique in Zagreb. A restaurant that meets the culinary needs of office workers by day with good (and very affordable) daily menus.

And then a little fine cuisine à la carte in the evening. And with no neighbors within earshot, an ideal place to organize an event with live music.

A friend invited me over to lunch to check it out. Coming from Manchester, I grew up with concrete servings on a maximum of three servings, but I admit that I found the seemingly endless number of dishes at this lunch to be quite appealing. And certainly not combinations I had had before.

And I had never had kimchi in a restaurant in all my time in Croatia – a great combination with a breaded tuna tartare with lemon thyme mayonnaise.

The culinary artist behind the lunch was Marko Jantolek, a promising 26-year-old chef from Zagreb. After the Michelin-starred cuisine Xmas Zagreb’s famous restaurant and bistro Pod zidom, he decided to cook new ideas and new dishes right here at Matrix.

The restaurant is run by the famous and experienced Croatian caterer and sommelier Manuela Maras, who specializes in wines and everything related to them. That is why she has ensured that the new Zagreb restaurant offers a rich wine list of more than a hundred labels from the best Croats, but also from a dozen of the world’s great winemakers.

A great lunch, and it wasn’t long before I returned, for the official opening night, when some of the best known names in the Croatian food scene made up a big part of the guest list.

Researchers at MIT’s Computing and Artificial Intelligence Laboratory (CSAIL) have developed an open-source Multiply-ADDitioN-lESS (MADDNESS) algorithm, which accelerates machine learning using approximate matrix multiplication (AMM) . MADDNESS does not require any multiplication-addition operation and performs 10 times faster than other approximate methods and 100 times faster than exact multiplication.

The team described MADDNESS and a set of experiments in an article presented at the recent International Conference on Machine Learning (ICML). Unlike many other AMM algorithms, MADDNESS does not use any multiply-add operation. Instead, MADDNESS uses a set of efficient learned hash functions that achieve encode rates of 100 GB / second using a single CPU thread. Hash functions map the input data to an index in a lookup table that contains precomputed dot products. Although the algorithm introduces some output error, the authors show that the algorithm has a theoretical upper bound on the error, which can be compensated for by speed. In a series of experiments comparing the performance of MADDNESS to other algorithms in an image classifier, the researchers found that MADDNESS offered a better speed-precision tradeoff and achieved “virtually the same precision as exact multiplication” while being 10 times faster.

Matrix multiplication is a fundamental operation in machine learning and one of the most time consuming, due to the heavy use of multiply-add instructions. Since GPU and TPU chips can perform many multiple additions in parallel, they perform matrix multiplication faster than CPUs, making them attractive for ML applications; however, they can be too expensive or even unavailable for researchers on a budget, or in resource-limited applications like IoT. Thus, many researchers have studied AMM algorithms, which trade the precision of matrix multiplication for speed.

The MADDNESS algorithm makes several assumptions about multiplied matrices: “large, relatively dense, and residing in single machine memory”, which occur in a wide variety of machine learning applications. In particular, a matrix contains fixed values; this can represent the weights in an image classifier model. The other matrix represents the input data; for example, the pixels of an image to classify. MADDNESS is based on a vector quantization algorithm called product quantification (PQ). In PQ, a large set of input vectors is analyzed to create a small number of prototype vectors. The products of each prototype vector with the fixed weight vector are pre-calculated. Then, any new input vector is mapped to its most similar prototype using a hash function, which gives an index to a pre-calculated product.

The key innovation with MADDNESS uses a preprocessing step to produce very fast hash functions that do not require multiply-add operations. The functions are based on binary regression trees; each tree has 16 leaves which represent buckets of hashish. Mapping from an input vector to a prototype only requires a comparison with the threshold values ​​of the divisions of the tree. MADDNESS includes two additional performance enhancements: a prototype optimization that chooses a set of prototypes that minimizes the error in rebuilding the original array, and a fast 8-bit aggregation that combines multiple products using computational instructions from material-specific average instead of an add-on.

The researchers compared MADDNESS to six other AMM algorithms, including Principal Component Analysis (PCA) and Bolt, their own previous AMM algorithm, as well as exact matrix multiplication using BLAS. The AMM algorithms were used as part of an image classifier trained and evaluated on the ICRA datasets. MADDNESS has outperformed all other methods, achieving a “much better speed-precision compromise”. The team also compared MADDNESS to other algorithms using kernel classifiers trained on UCR Time Series Archive datasets; in these experiments MADDNESS was “significantly faster than the alternatives at a given level of precision”.

Lead author Davis Blalock joined a discussion on Reddit to answer questions on the MADDNESS article. Asked about extending the algorithm to nonlinear functions, Blalock clarified:

Work on its extension to other linear functions (eg convolution) and intelligently exchange linear operations with a global neural network. So in the sense that neural networks are nonlinear functions, yes. Do not work on the direct approximation of nonlinearities as they are inexpensive to simply apply to the output of linear operations (especially if you are just writing a merged kernel that does both operations at the same time).

The Fraunhofer Institute for Solar Power Systems ISE and M10 Industries have unveiled new matrix shingle technology for connecting solar cells that is said to produce modules 2-6% more efficient than those using half-cut connected cells of conventional way.

In this approach, the stringer arranges the shingle solar cells in a staggered fashion similar to how bricks are laid in a masonry wall. This arrangement increases the efficiency of the module while improving shade tolerance, the duo said.

Fraunhofer ISE said the technology goes “one step further” than conventional shingle solar module technologies, in which individual cells overlap in a shingle arrangement to reduce the space between solar cells in a string, resulting in lower currents and higher yields.

The matrix arrangement allows fuller use of the entire module area, producing modules up to 6% more efficient than modules using conventionally connected half-cut solar cells.

During this time, the array also allows current to flow around shaded areas of the module, potentially doubling the amount of power a module can produce under partial shade.

The new spar used to develop the matrix was built as part of the Shirkan project and funded by the German Federal Ministry of Economic Affairs and Energy.

After presenting an article on the subject at the European Solar Photovoltaic Energy Conference and Exhibition (EU PVSEC) last month, the first prototypes using this technology will be on display this week at the Intersolar Europe 2021 exhibition in Munich.
