Astera Fixtures Helps Energize Matrix Resurrections Toronto Premiere
Canada – Technical event specialist Spotlight Audio Visual Industries (SAVI) handled the full event production for the highly anticipated Toronto premiere of The Matrix Resurrections, staged at the Scotiabank Theater Cineplex, and featuring more than 300 fixtures at Astera Wireless LEDs.
The spectacular visual design for this fourth launch of the sci-fi action movie Matrix was created by SAVI’s Avi Yurman and involved projection mapping onto the front of the building with lighting to support this and illuminate the entire environment. of the cineplex, inside and out. The venue has been transformed into a vibrant and distinctive Matrix green color.
Every light fixture, except for some moving lights helping with facade illumination, was Astera explained Avi, who used Astera AX1 PixelTubes, AX3 LightDrops, AX5 TriplePARs, the new AX9 SuperPARs, AX10 SpotMax’s, both versions of the new AX2 pixel bar – the long meter and half meter – plus Astera NYX bulbs and numerous emitters, all owned by the company.
All Astera units were powered and operated wirelessly from a grandMA2 console.
SAVI is a big supporter of Astera having first invested in the brand when it launched the AX1 five years ago. “They’ve been a great success,” Avi said, noting that over the past two years the company has replaced nearly every static light fixture in its inventory with an Astera product, all supplied through Astera’s Canadian-based distributor. in Toronto, Lumenayre.
“The lights are of high quality and for an event like this, which needed to be rigged, executed and then taken down in optimal time, multiple wireless fixtures were the only option,” he confirmed, delighted with the results.
“The original idea was to paint the walls and surfaces of the building with light and complement the projections, so the complete opposite of a big beam show, and that’s exactly what we did!”
NYX bulbs were used above the “Black Carpet” VIP area which saw star power during the evening, including Keanu Reeves. NYX bulbs replaced traditional bulbs with mind-blowing Matrix electric green equivalents that really popped!
Sixty AX2 PixelBars were attached to the interior glass and walls of the building’s atrium, and along the escalator path, with more AX2-100s on the opposite side also being projected. Avi was impressed with the brightness and range of these, even with some units 50 yards from their target surfaces.
The small Astera AX3s were attached via their magnetic bases to the stairs between the hallway of the AX1s and AX2s.
The new PowerPAR AX9s, one of three new products launched last year by Astera, were positioned around the perimeter of interior walls, where they provided excellent uplighting for exit areas.
The vast exterior glass wall of the venue was lit with Astera AX10s and other AX9s, illuminating the structural elements.
Avi, LD of 15 years, comments on how the light output of LED fixtures has improved dramatically in recent years as technology has advanced, becoming a game changer, especially for smaller fixtures.
“The light quality and color saturation etc. are fantastic,” he says, noting that the continuity between the fixtures is excellent, an essential feature with large amounts in a space or when washing a large area or a set.
Other benefits of using Astera products for this style of project are time savings. SAVI provides many one-off shows, with the premiere of Matrix Resurrections a good example, where a huge amount of real estate had to be lit up in a very short period of time.
“We can load the units into the warehouse, pre-address them, get them to site, deploy them and get them up and running on the console extremely quickly! It’s a very efficient workflow, and our whole process has benefited from integrating these devices,” he concludes with a big smile.
