$100,000 on the table at Langley for Sunday’s ATCO Cup

Thunderbird Show Park returns with its three-week Summer Fort series. Starting with Summer Fort Welcome, the series will move on to Summer Fort Classic and, finally, Summer Fort Festival.

Each week-long event has distinct characteristics and includes events from different equestrian classes. This year’s series top events have three Grand Prizes with a total prize pool of $250,000. The $100,000 ATCO CSI3* Cup takes place on Sunday, August 21.

The “big” prize drew riders from across North America and Europe, with some coming to the event to prepare for their masters, shared Chris Pack, president of Thunderbird Show Park.

The Onni Group Grand Prix took place on Sunday, August 14 with a winning prize of $100,000. The winner of the third and final in the series – the Paladin Risk Solutions Grand Prize on Sunday, August 28 – will take home $50,000.

Adding that there are more than just sports available for spectators, Pack said his team wanted to make sure anyone who came to their facility was not watching, just show jumping.

Events in the series will include food trucks, vendors, a beer garden, face painting, and pony rides.

“We want to make sure that when someone comes to the park with their family…they have a good time. There will be plenty to do all day for families.

In show jumping, the highest levels of competition are those rated five stars.

“The bigger the star rating, the bigger the jumps, the bigger the prize money,” Pack explained.

Two of the upcoming Thunderbird events are three-star, which Pack says makes the event a “high-level” competition.

According to Pack, spectators can expect to see some of the greatest horse jumping at three-star events.

“They jump 1.6m and above.”

Throughout the three weeks the competition will feature around 1,000 horses and Pack expects around 1,500 spectators for each Sunday event.

“We know people love our events and they come here year after year.”

Pack concluded by adding that watching the size of the jumps these horses are capable of will be surprising and exciting for beginners.
